We played another big dawg this week, the almighty Hoover. Although they are a big dawg they have had their tail tucked tightly between their legs after all of the contraversy caused by their former coach last year. They got a new coach and everybody was wondering what Hoover was gonna do this year. After getting blanked by Spain Park (Hoover's red-headed step-child), I really expected another game with the same results. Boy was I wrong!

Of course, Hoover showed up with their usual arrogance and pomp and circumstance. Here's their big sign:

I wanted to make them eat this sign SO BAD!

Tonight was also the night the elementary school cheerleaders come cheer with the varsity gang. I normally don't like this night because all of those itty, bitty cheerleaders bring with them a bunch of chatty parents and grand-parents who care nothing about seeing the game OR the halftime show. They weren't as annoying as they usually are this year and, as always, they all leave after halftime. There were about 50 of them from our 3 elementary schools.

I didn't film either band because it was just crazy crowded with all those cheerleaders and people everywhere.

Hoover's band is good. They are big and have a good sound in the stands (although I think we have better arrangements to some of the stand songs). Their show was good, but I thought it was boring and they almost went over because they took too long getting started. Our show brought down the house again, even though we were missing one of our top percussionists.

It was a fun night and the rain drops finally came in the final minutes of the game but just a few sprinkles which everyone was happy about because it was very hot and humid.

Next week we travel to play Vestavia, one of our biggest and oldest rivals. Since we've already gotten two of our toughest games out of the way I definitely think we will get some region wins this year. I hope so anyway!

Who's with me? Who else would love to see a [Sports is Good] channel on VOX? As many people that are on VOX worldwide I think it would be a great way to feature blog postings about sports from all over the world. Of course, it would feature popular U.S. sports such as baseball, football and Nascar but could also feature sports from other countries which would help us all understand different sports from around the world. Personally, as a sports fan, I believe we would find that no matter what the sport or what country it resides, the passion that the fans feel for their sports is universal.

Anyone who's read my blog knows that I'm the epitomy of the 'over-protective Mother' where my daughter is concerned. I wasn't that way with my son when he was growing up. It's just different with girls I guess. I wear that hat proudly because I believe that far too many parents tend to 'turn their kids loose' way too young and sometimes some really, really bad things happen because of it. Well, over the last few months Hailey and I have worked together to ease into the transition and start taking baby steps towards her independence. You know that she got her driver's license in July and I had finally let her take the car alone (to the library and back) just a couple of weeks ago. We had planned to let her take the car again for some small errand last weekend but the rain from Fay nipped that in the bud. But once the rains moved out we were back on track and since football started her social calendar has absolutely exploded!

It may surprise some people when I say that my daughter has never been out on a car date with a boy. It is true! There are various reasons why: most of her dates have been movies where they just meet each other there, and, she tends to like younger boys so they usually don't have a car or even their license yet (which was always fine with me), or the boys parents have taken them (also fine with me). Some have had cars, but I've just said 'No' and we've made other arrangements. But now she's reached the age where there are very few boys in her age range that don't have a license and a car so it's something that can no longer be avoided. And I'm ready for that. I trust my daughter and I know she has very good judgment.

So.........

Last Monday night she went out on a dinner date with a boy named Kong that had been trying to court her for a while. Since it was raining (and because he drove a high-performance BMW) I only let them go to a restaurant very close by. And since it was a school night she had to be home at 9:30. He came to the door, met me and he seemed very nice and responsible. He graduated high school last year and is currently attending classes at UAB. He took her to Grey House Grill and had her at the door at exactly 9:30. He asked her if they could 'date' but she said she wasn't interested in having a boyfriend right now.

Tuesday, Wednesday and Thursday were all school and band with no time for anything else. But boy, oh boy, when Friday rolled around.....look out! I always know when I hear her say "Ummm, Mama....." that means she's going to ask me if she can go somewhere.

Friday night after our football game she wanted to go to Purple Onion. Purple Onion is a franchised restaurant but they are all different. Ours is especially cool and eclectic looking and it is THE PLACE all of the kids go after the football games, win or lose, home or away. I dropped her off and was going to run to the grocery store and come back and get her (she was going to survey the crowd and see if she wanted to stay longer). As I was leaving I saw good old Duffy pulling into the Onion. Duffy is one of Hailey's good friends. He was a tuba player who graduated 2 years ago but hasn't gone off to college or anything. He's just working locally and still kind of hanging out with the high school crowd. He drove Hailey home from school her entire Sophomore year and I paid him for gas. I trust him completely with her safety. I called her as I was leaving the grocery store to let her know I was on my way. Of course, she wanted to stay later because the place was hopping. I said, you can stay as long as Duffy can bring you home. She asked, and of course he said yes. I let her stay out until midnight and he brought her home safe and sound.

Saturday, I let her take the car and go to The Pig to pick up a few things for me. Her first official errand run for Mom. Yeah! She did fine!

Saturday night there was apparently a party at someone's house to watch the college games (obviously a facade to fool the parents LOL). The person's house was very close to the Onion and Kong was going to pick her up there and take her to the boys house and then bring her home (but it wasn't a 'date'). She got there, confirmed for me that there was an adult present, gave me a landline# and (of course) I gave her the little speech about sex, drugs, alcohol, etc. I let her stay until midnight again. She did good but lost a few points because she kept asking to stay later AND tried the old "I'm spending the night with so-and-so" bit....ummm...no way. I'm not falling for that one!

Sunday, I let her take the car and go to the mall to shop. She stayed there a while and wanted to stop by a friend's house which is on the way home and I said OK. She made it home OK but I checked her phone logs and saw that she had made a 3 minute call while I knew she was driving. Oops! She lost a few more points there and got a warning. She said she was stopped at a light. I don't know about you but I've never seen a light stay red for 3 minutes!

Sunday night, of course, since there was no school on Monday, there was yet another party. And yes, I let her go. We had gone and picked up Michael and I was planning to cook us a good family dinner and watch the race but I knew she really wanted to be with her friends so I let her off the hook. Another good friend of hers named Andrew picked her up and took her straight there (the house was literally down the street). She did good but lost some more points because she was really pushing my buttons asking to stay later and later. I let her stay until 12:30 and since Andrew had somehow disappeared a boy named Brandon brought her home. She made it safely and we had a little talk.

I don't believe in curfews. I prefer to decide on a case-by-case basis when she needs to be home. The reason I don't believe in curfew is because I think it gives kids the idea they can go anywhere with anyone as long as they are home by 'x' time. I read one particular story about a girl who was killed in an accident coming home one night. Her parents were very careful about who they let her go with and she had never missed her curfew before. The boy who was driving, admitted to the police that he was speeding because she was afraid she was going to be late getting home. Well, she was very late. Her parents are still waiting for her to come home.....

THE NIGHT THAT ALICIA BETANCOURT NEVER CAME HOME

Some people may think I take this teen-driven crash thing too far. Even my own sister, who also has a teenage daughter, scoffed at my constant research on teen-driven deaths and eventually told me to stop forwarding the stories to her. She chose to turn the blind eye to the glaringly sickening statistics and a few months later she handed her newly-licensed 16 year old a vehicle and they keys. I continue my research because I keep hoping that some change will come about. I use the parent-teen driving contract because I feel that it gives my daughter a better than average chance of avoiding or surviving a crash. I also look out for other teens. At the beginning of band camp while I was doing my dropping off/picking up song and dance thing I kept noticing this one boy who was driving very recklessly on the school grounds. I know the boy. He's one of my daughter's sort of friend. He's in the band. He's in ROTC. He's a good kid. But he was driving like a maniac. Day after day I would hear him squeal his tires and speed down the hill exiting the band practice field and run the TWO stop signs on the way out of the school and then squeal his tires again as he hit the main road. It gave me chills and I thought there was no way his parents could possibly condone that kind of driving. On the night when the kids were issued their uniforms it was a little chaotic as they all were dismissed from marching practice and had to re-congregate in the band room to get their uniform, shoes and hats and then return to their cars. I was waiting beside my car with my trunk open because I had 3 kids riding with and were going to have them put their uniforms in the trunk. Well this boy came flying by and almost HIT me! I felt, as a parent I had to tell somebody. The next day I wrote a very long e-mail to the band director and copied the high school principal. Both replied back and thanked me for letting them know. The band director said he would speak to the boy about his driving and the principal (he's new this year and very gung ho) said that reckless driving on campus would result in revoked parking passes. The next time I was waiting for Hailey to get out of marching practice I saw him coming down the hill. He was driving normal and stopped at the stop signs. On the first day of school Hailey told me the new principal held an assembly to announce some rule changes and he made a special mention about kids driving recklessly on campus. I hope that I had something to do with that and it could have actually saved that boy from having an accident or hurting someone else with his reckless driving. I don't want to be a hero, I just want the kids to stop dying.....

Well it's finally here! Our first game of the season and our night started out with some drama. Hailey was supposed to be there at 6pm to line up for stadium entrance. SHE was holding us up (as usual) but when she finally came downstairs to leave we would have made it in plenty of time. As we were walking out the door I said "Where's your clarinet?" She said "I don't know". "What do you mean you don't know? Where is it?" She said "I always put it on the table" Well we're both looking at the table and it's not there. My mind is racing thinking someone broke into our house last night and ONLY took a student clarinet? No wait, that's crazy. We looked in her bedroom, not there. We looked in the car, not there. Finally I said "Did you leave it in the bandroom?" (a big pet peeve of mine and I've always told her not to do that because I KNEW eventually this would happen). She couldn't remember (because the night before was just so crazy with the wreck and all). Finally she remembered that yes she left it in her locker in the band room. OMG! So I start driving to the school knowing that nobody would be there, it was almost 6 o'clock already (our stadium is NOT at our school). Finally we called the school and somebody answered (THANK GOD). He said we had five minutes before he was locking the doors. We made it and she got in and got her clarinet. The coach that was there was actually supposed to be at the stadium with the team but he had stayed behind because of 2 kids whose parents never picked them up from school. CAN YOU BELIEVE THAT?????????? I don't know what he did with those two boys. I guess he called child services or something. HOW CAN SOMEONE JUST NOT PICK THEIR KID UP FROM SCHOOL????????????? So Hailey got her clarinet and we got there in time for her to line up. New rule: she is NOT to leave her clarinet at school until football season is over!!

So we're playing the current big dogs of 6A Region 6, Spain Park. Spain Park is a new school. It's a spin-off from Hoover High School because the city of Hoover got so big they needed 2 high schools. For a while they were the red-headed step-child of Hoover until last year when they put Hoover out of the playoffs and went to the state finals to play the REAL big dog of the state of Alabama, Prattville High School. Spain Park took home the runner-up trophy for 6A in 2007.

Two years ago we beat them in a very exciting game that went into triple overtime! It was awesome AND their homecoming to boot! It was sweeter than sweet! Here's my video from that night:

Last year they retaliated by beating us at our homecoming.

This year I did not think we could beat them but I was hoping we could at least put some points on the board.

They came with the usual cockiness (which I guess is deserved because dethroning Hoover was a HUGE accomplishment) and signs.

(don't think she's upset or doesn't want to be there, they are TOLD to have a stern look on their face when they are marching at attention because they are supposed to be Patriots)

Our new Junior quarterback seems to have a really good arm but he and his receivers just weren't able to complete very many passes. There were a lot of good efforts and lots of 'almosts' but nothing that resulted in any points being put on the board. Our defense did an excellent job of holding back SP's powerful offense. The score was 7-0 SP at the half.

To be a new school and a young music program Spain Park has a small but impressive band. I've seen them several times over the years at games and competitions and although they compete in a smaller division than us they always take home lots of trophies. Their show this year was kind of a **yawn**. The most exciting part was when one of their dancing girls accidentally unhooked her halter uniform during one of their annoying costume changes and apparently it fell down to expose something? I didn't see it but I heard a man talking about it. I'm not sure what, if anything was showed but I guess you could call that a wardrobe malfunction.

So finally they were done and it was our turn. Even though I had seen the show twice already they were different circumstances and it just wasn't the same. I had already decided I wasn't going to video the show tonight. I just wanted to watch and take it in. Wow! It was incredible! As I had blogged before, I knew it would take a few times before I 'fell in love' with this new show. Well I fell in love last night! They were flawless, sounded great and had the entire crowd up on their feet (even the SP people)!

Late in the game the bands started an ESPN battle that was completely out of hand! I hope I get a chance to film that again this year (we won the battle of course, hands down!)

SP scored two more touchdown on us to make the final score 21-0. Spain Park's band stayed in the stands until our band was dismissed and then they started playing ESPN again. I thought that was pretty funny!

So game 1 of Hailey's Senior season is over and we're 0-1 and I don't even care!

I'm going to just take it all in and enjoy it. I'm going to take every photo I can take and film the band as much as I can because when it's over this year, it's over, that's all folks!

We play Hoover next week at home....oh boy!

Samford University is a beautiful college that is across the street from Homewood High School. It's a Christian college and I don't think they've ever been really recognized for their sports programs. I'll be the first to admit that my knowledge of high school football far outweighs my knowledge of college football as far as the classifications, conferences, etc go. I do know that colleges at this level don't travel their marching bands so we were invited to come over and play in the stands with their band and perform during the empty 10 minutes of halftime left open by the missing visitor band. this is Samford's first season in The Southern Conference and they were really pumped up about their season opener! They had their very first pre-game tailgating party! The atmosphere was very festive!

Our band was to march across the street straight into the stadium and into their seats where they would play with Samford's band and then play second during halftime (after halftime we planned to leave since it was a school night).

Band parents littered the entrance to Samford to watch the band march across the street.

Here's my video:

That little bit of space in front of them is where Samford's band was going to sit! Samford's band is very small in comparison but they were definitely college-level in their musical ability.

I was not happy with our seats at all! Since we had 'general admission' tickets (for $12 bucks) we had to sit practically in the endzone on the opposite end from the bands so we could barely hear them playing in the stands. It was one of those grandstands where you walk down rather than up and Mom does not do well with those. We had to walk down about 20 steps to get to our seats. It was hot and crowded but we wound up sitting with a large group of Homewood band parents so we all talked and reminisced (especially those of us with Seniors in the band).

Samford put on a great show for their teams entrance including fireworks!

Halftime rolled around and I was ready for it. Both bands did a good job and I made some videos of Homewood's show but I was so far off center in that seat that they did not turn out well so I'm not going to upload them (plenty more chances to film them).

After halftime there was a mass exodus of Homewood people (the score was still 0-0 at that point in the game). Getting BACK across the street did not go nearly as organized as getting over there did. The band did not re-organize into a group so the cops had to stop the traffic about 5 times, plus it was dark and there were cars and pedestrians everywhere. Of course all of the slacker band parents who didn't attend the game were sitting over there in their cars, parked where they aren't supposed to be (just like every year). My Mom was tired and ready to get her hour long drive home over with. Hailey was tired and had at least a full hours worth of homework to do. The cops were driving back and forth between Samford and the school on motorcycles while the percussion decided to march and play cadence across the street. It was total chaos! I drove Mom to her car and told Hailey to wait for me at the stop sign by the band room. Well just as Mom got out of her parking place and was slowly making her way through the very tight lane caused by the illegally parked slacker parents, she accidentally knocked this ladies side mirror off her car. I was a couple of cars behind my Mom when I saw her pull over. I thought something was wrong with her car but this irate black woman was running after her car and screaming at her. I stopped and got out and my Mom was visibly shaking. I tried to explain to the woman that they could just exchange insurance information so my Mom could go ahead and go home. This woman went whacko on me started screaming and hollering that I was trying to put my Mom in my car and leave! So I called the police and they came and took a police report. I told the lady that she wasn't supposed to be parking there and she started screaming at me again! Her kids looked so embarrassed! Some of the band directors and boosters came out and they too told her she was not supposed to be parking there but she spouted off to them too. What a total black bitch!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!! WHY do they have to act like that????????????? I'm SO sick of it! She had my poor Mom thinking she was going to jail or something but I told her it was a simple property damage liability claim and I knew that she had plenty enough coverage to replace a 200.00 mirror. So finally we were done and the awful lady left. The cop was still there filling out the report and I got in my car to leave. I was waiting for Mom to get going and she called me and said her car wouldn't start! OMG what ELSE can happen? It was already almost 10pm. I turned around and went back and got in her car. All of the lights and stuff worked so I knew it wasn't the battery. Then I noticed that it was not in park. LOL and Thank God! Apparently, when she stopped after the accident she was so upset she didn't put it all the way in park before she turned it off. It cranked right up and finally we were on our way home.

I got home and waited anxiously for my Mom to get home and call me. I knew how upset she was and I was very worried about her. She made it safely and I told her to go ahead and call her insurance company and report the accident so she would have a claim number. That lady had told my Mother in a very threatening voice that she was going to call her at 7am the next morning. I told my Mom that she did not have to talk to her just to give her the claim number and the number to her insurance company and hang up on her if she got belligerent. She found out she had 50,000 property damage liability coverage and they gave her the claim number. The stupid lady never called! Hailey stayed up until 1am and finished her homework and we were all feeling rough by the time we got to bed.

WHAT A NIGHT! I'm ready for some Homewood football now but that lady better not EVER speak to me again with her damn finger in my face! I don't give a rats ass what color your skin is you just don't treat people like that! FUCKING BITCH!!!!!!!!!!!!!

ps: The next day the band booster president e-mailed me to see how my Mom was and asked me who the lady was. I gave her the name she had given the police. I think the band is going to take some action against her since she was parked illegally!!! I hate slacker band parents!

Off to Waldrop Stadium for our first game against.....Spain Park!!!

Wow! This has been one crazy and exciting week. After the preview of the show for the Rose Parade president on Tuesday evening the band was scheduled to appear on our local Fox morning show Good Day Alabama yesterday morning. Hailey had to be at school, in full uniform at 6am. Jeh Jeh Pruett is one of our most popular local news personalities and does a piece every morning called Jeh Jeh live. He usually features some local group or organization that has something going on. He comes on intermittently throughout the entire show which runs from 5am until 9am.

But first here's some media coverage by our local CBS station at the preview on Tuesday night.

There is a story and there are two videos. One is the piece that appeared on the local 10 o'clock news and the other is a video of the band's performance (which is green as I said in my previous entry).

HOMEWOOD BAND ON CBS42 NEWS

Now back to yesterday morning, we arrived around 6:05am and the Fox van was already there. Hailey went on in and I sat in my car for a bit. I saw Jeh Jeh run up the stairs. The first segment (in which Jeh Jeh donned a Homewood Patriot jacket and hat) ran live around 6:20am. I heard it on the radio in the car and finally decided to go inside. They were all set up in the auditorium and I found myself a seat sort of in the middle so I could see everything. I took a few pictures but I was hesitant because of the flash.

The next segment was just before 7am and I started filming the same time they went on the air. The live segment cut off just after the band started the second song but I kept filming until Mr. Pence told them to stop. You can't hear the talking very well but Jeh Jeh is just asking the Rose President and Mr. Pence some questions about the parade and then he throws it to the band. They perform their first song, America the Beautiful (a compilation) and their second song, Strike Up the Band (notice Jeh Jeh dancing off to the side until he drops his phone and starts looking for it).

The Tournament of Roses Parade president (hereafter referred to as "The Pres") is here for a visit. Every year The Pres travels all around the country visiting all of the high school bands who have been chosen to march in the Rose Parade. He gets VIP treatment while he watches the band perform and then presents the band with the Tournament of Roses flag they will carry in the parade. He also attends some sort of fund raiser (ours is tomorrow night and is a sort of meet and greet with drinks (cash bar), finger sandwiches and a silent auction. He also gives the band director ideas on how to raise money for the trip (which for us, will cost well over $100,000).

Even though the kids have worked hard I know that this was a 'hurried up' version of what our show will be in a few weeks. It was necessary to leave out a lot of the bells and whistles and slick moves (which require a lot of practice to perfect) in order to give a clean performance for The Pres.

We had a good crowd on hand to watch this preview performance. The stadium was over 1/2 filled to capacity and there wasn't even a football game! This is just a testament to the great City of Homewood and how it supports the school programs. The band and auxillary were all on the field broken up into their sections practicing and warming up for the show when The Pres arrived (because the show was VERY GREEN I did not make any videos....they never get it good until about mid-September anyway. I did make some pictures but my camera was on the portrait setting and I didn't know it so they don't have a lot of clarity).

What an honor it was to be there to cheer these kids on!

You know, after my daughter's first year in band I thought that I could NEVER love another halftime show as much as that one. Then in her Sophomore year (after seeing it a few times) I fell in love again....then I felt the same way at the beginning of her Junior year...then I fell in love again....and I'm sure this year I will fall in love again....one final time.

Tomorrow morning the band has to arrive at school at 6am in full uniform to appear on our local Fox morning show called Good Day Alabama. I will be there....camera in hand.

I let Hailey take the car alone today for the first time. It was SUCH a strange feeling watching my car drive away from me knowing that my BABY was behind the wheel. She's had her license for 3 weeks but has yet to go solo. I knew I had to start somewhere, I couldn't put it off forever. She needed to return her summer reading library book and I thought that would be an excellent opportunity for us to EASE into her driving alone. Our library is less than a mile from our house and it's all pretty much neighborhood driving to get there, which complies with the parent-child driving contract that we have (that is highly recommended). If you're not familiar with this contract and have a newly licensed teen or a soon to be licensed teen I strongly suggest that you look into it. It could save your child's life!

So I picked her up from work and she drove home and she was planning to 'drop me off' and go to the library but she actually wanted to make a practice run with me in the car to make sure she knew the way (I love my baby but she is seriously directionally challenged LOL...seriously it scares me). So we came home and left again and she drove to the library and back and then she felt confident that she knew the way so when we came home again she 'dropped me off' and took a giant step towards being independently mobile. I think I stood outside the entire time. My mind was racing with adrenaline! I told her not to call me, to not even pick up her phone unless she had a problem. I mentally drove with her ticking off the minutes....OK now she's here...now she's turning...now she's at the red light.........the feeling I had was very strange...I was worried but not so much...I felt confident in her ability to make this short trip on her own. I waited to see her coming down the street on her return trip and I felt my entire body shaking. I was flooded with both relief and pure joy when I saw the car come into view. She made it! YOU GO GIRL!

Next weekend we might try a trip to the mall...we're gonna do this together and do it right! I'm ready but I think I might need some Xanax!

If you have a teenager or have a kid that will eventually be a teenager you will eventually find yourself going through what I've been going through the past 2 years. The teen driving dilemma!

My daughter drove on her permit for almost 2 years before I would even let her go take her road test to get her graduated driver's license (even though she could have passed that dummied down, kiddieland road test a year ago). Even though she has her license now and passed Driver's Ed last year she still hasn't driven solo yet. She's not ready! She hasn't passed MY road test yet. She still makes mistakes and that scares the hell out of me. I had posted back in February that she would be getting a car for her 18th Birthday. That's turning out to be just about right. And I think that's how it should be. 16 year old kids (even the smart ones) are not even mature enough to keep their rooms clean yet I see over and over again parents taking them to get their license on that coveted 16th Birthday, throwing them the keys to a car, handing it over and celebrating because they don't have to drive their kid around anymore. Most don't take the time to think if their kid is REALLY ready to be out there alone. Most aren't. 5000 teenagers die each year in this country in teen-driven traffic accidents and the saddest part of it is parents could prevent many of them by setting the standards higher than what some government employee at the DMV says is satisfactory. My daughter is the most important thing in this world to me and she's worth all the extra time and inconvenience it causes me for her to be an excellent driver before I send her out there alone. She drives us everywhere now and I take every opportunity to point out situations of concern. I let her make the decisions but I still supervise and still OFTEN have to correct her. Am I going overboard? Hell no, this is my daughter's life we're talking about!

I was in the grocery line tonight and spotted a Reader's Digest with an article about Teen Driving. The magazine was almost 4 dollars so I didn't buy it but I found it on their website. It contains some tragic statistics and some good pointers for parents. It also ranks states as far as graduated licensing laws and fatality numbers. Alabama ranked in the 'good' category for graduated licensing laws but was the #4 state for teen fatalities. This is due to the fact that a large part of our state is rural. Rural areas seem to contribute highly to teen-driven fatalities. Where we live is very urban. The traffic is heavy and moves slowly and there are traffic signals about every block. There's not very many places in our town where you could speed if you wanted to because of the congestion. I'm very thankful for that. But fatalities do happen in Alabama. One such accident that happened here last year made national headlines when 3 cheerleaders from one high school died when the car they were riding in went off an embankment. What bothered me SO MUCH about this accident is that there were 7 girls in this car...7! This was not a van or an SUV it was a standard 4-door sedan most of which only have seatbelts for 6 people. There were 2 in the front and 5 in the back. To me, the responsibility of this accident lies solely on the parents of the driver and all of the girls. These girls should have been taught that you don't ride like that, that you don't take on that many passengers, especially on a dark, curvy road at night. They were coming back from a cheer competition they had gone to straight from school. So very sad, tragic and preventable.

Another one that happened here last March, the last day of Spring Break. 4 teens died when their car was hit by a Fed Ex truck on the interstate. Two 18 year old boys and two girls, sisters 14 and 17 were riding, in a convertible (hey dumb ass parents...DON'T give a teenager a convertible...duh! They might as well be riding a motorcycle with no helmet), to a stable to go horseback riding. The two sister's Mother was driving in a car ahead of them. Something blew out of the convertible and the driver pulled over to the shoulder and attempted to back up and retrieve the item. The car fishtailed, turned sideways and flew out into traffic. The Fed Ex truck hit the car on the passenger side and drove up on top of it before slamming it into the inside retaining wall of the bridge. The Mother of the girls saw the car pull over and got off on the next exit to go back. By the time she got there both of her daughters were already covered up with sheets. So tragic and again, preventable.

I work for an auto insurance company. Thankfully I DO NOT work in the claims department. I wouldn't want to have to deal with those difficult details. There is a reason why car insurance rates skyrocket when a young driver is added to the policy and this is the reason the extreme likelihood that they will be involved in a crash. Premiums are surcharged around 300% for a young female driver and 400% for a young male driver. When I added my daughter to my policy it went from approximately $450.00 for 6 months to $1200.00 for 6 months. That is a big ouch to the pocketbook but it should be an even bigger wake up call to parents to put a little bit more into their teen driver than just turning them loose because the DMV said OK!

Anyway, here's the article. Check out where your state ranks. You can also go to www.rd.com for more information on teen driving!

Warning: Teen Drivers
• Kylie Grayden, 17, of Shorewood, Minnesota, glanced at her iPod while driving with her cousin and a friend, both 17. When she veered off the road and flipped her car into a ditch, she and her friend were killed.

• Heading home from practice, Jonathan Chapman, a 16-year-old high school basketball player from La Plata, Maryland, was reportedly speeding when his car rammed an SUV. He and three friends, ages 14 to 16, were killed.

• Five days after graduating from high school, Bailey Goodman, 17, of Fairport, New York, and four classmates were on their way to her family's cottage. Moments after text messages were exchanged on Bailey's cell phone, she slammed into an oncoming truck. All five teens were killed.

More than 5,000 teenagers die in car accidents every year. “If we saw these numbers coming back from a war zone, it would be on the front page every day,” says Vincent Leibell, a state senator from New York, where some 200 teens died in crashes in 2006.

The numbers aren't budging. Fatalities did drop from the mid-'70s through the early '90s, mainly because of tougher seat belt and drunk driving laws. But since then, the statistics have remained stubbornly high, despite improved safety features in cars.

Some of this is due to teens themselves. “Anytime you have immaturity combined with inexperience, you have the potential for disaster,” says Nicole Nason, head of the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration. “And that's what you get with a 16-year-old behind the wheel.”

But that's not the whole story. Speed, distraction, and driver inexperience cause most crashes-and those things can be controlled. “These deaths should not be considered an inevitable part of the teen experience,” says Justin McNaull, director of state relations for AAA. “We can change this.” Here are three steps that will prevent crashes and save countless lives -- of teens and others on the road.

1. TEACH YOUR KIDS
Part of the reason for teens' poor judgment is hardwired: The brain's prefrontal cortex-which handles tasks like controlling impulses-isn't fully formed. “Our brains get tons of input from multiple places,” says Flaura Winston, MD, scientific director of the Center for Injury Research and Prevention at the Children's Hospital of Philadelphia. “Adults don't act on all those impulses; we sort them. But teens have a hard time doing this.” And they have a hard time understanding what's risky in a car. In a recent study, researchers surveyed 5,600 teens and found huge gaps in their knowledge.

One problem is that teens fail to see certain behaviors as dangerous. Only 28 percent said using a cell phone is a risk, and 10 percent said the same about having other teens in the car. (They're both big distractions, and boys in the car are more distracting than girls.) Only half cited speeding or not wearing a seat belt. Even if teens got the right idea about a behavior-for instance, 87 percent said drinking and driving is dangerous-they didn't view it as their problem: Only 16 percent said they ever see it happen. (Some might be lying; 25 percent of young drivers killed in crashes had been drinking.)

The message for parents: Spell out the dangers for your kids. It's up to you because only 20 percent of schools offer driver ed today, down from 90 percent in the 1980s. Nason says, “You have a responsibility to make sure your child isn't going to drive into someone else head-on because he's busy chatting on his cell phone and nobody's told him, 'Hang up the phone and drive the car.' ”

2. FIGHT FOR STRICTER STATE LAWS
“You don't suddenly become a good driver when you turn 16,” Nason says. “We need to ease teens into a lifelong habit of good driving.”

That's the goal of graduated driver licensing laws, which impose restrictions before teens earn a full license. An ideal law would set the minimum age for a permit at 16, limit passengers to one, ban cell phones, prohibit driving between 10 p.m. and 5 a.m., and not allow a full license until age 18.

These laws make sense. A recent study by Johns Hopkins University for the AAA Foundation for Traffic Safety found that a tough phase-in law could decrease deaths among 16-year-old drivers by 38 percent. “It's clear that giving young drivers more time behind the wheel with supervision makes a big difference,” says Susan Baker, the study's coauthor.

That was the case in Georgia, where a graduated licensing law slashed fatal crashes involving 16-year-old drivers by 37 percent over five years and cut speeding-related fatal crashes among the same age group by nearly half. The law also imposes stiff penalties -- including having a license taken away for up to a year-for speeding, reckless driving, and other serious errors.

Currently, 47 states have phase-in laws, but few are as effective as they could be. Only eight set the minimum age for a permit at 16. Fewer than ten prohibit driving after 10 p.m. And only 12 have strict limits on passengers. Kansas State Senator Phil Journey pushed for a bill to impose nighttime, passenger, and cell phone restrictions on teen drivers, but it failed in his state's House of Representatives. He says the costs of refusing to act are obvious: “Statistically, we know that somebody's going to leave home and is not going to survive because this bill didn't become law.”

Find out how to lobby for tough laws in your state.

The main obstacle is the belief that stricter measures impinge on parents' right to decide when and with whom their kids drive. The reasons for the complaints vary: Some parents want their teens to run errands unaccompanied; others want their kids to drive a farm truck as soon as possible. (That's what sank the Kansas bill.)

Vermont State Representative Kathy Lavoie, the mother of two teens, supports some limitations but balks at a nighttime restriction that would prevent kids from driving to hunting grounds in the early morning, which teens in her state enjoy. “When it comes to an infringement on parental rights, I get nervous,” she says.

Nason of the traffic safety administration has heard these objections before. “Fear of the 'nanny state' always rears its head,” she says. “But a car crash doesn't just affect the person in the car. It affects the people in the car they hit.” Add in the costs to law enforcement and health care, she notes, and it's hard to argue against putting society's interests ahead of parents' rights. In a recent study, AAA found that teen crashes cost the rest of us more than $34 billion annually.

Bradford Hill, the Massachusetts state representative who sponsored legislation that cut speeding by 33 percent and reduced serious-injury crashes by more than 40 percent, said most parents in his state support the law. “They say, 'I'm so glad these changes were made,' ” he says.

Some teens feel the same way. In New York, 18-year-old David Mangano of White Plains sees the value in his state's law that limits teen passengers to two. “If you have a lot of people in the car, it's really hectic,” he says, “so it's nice to have that restriction.”

3. GET TOUGH AT HOME
Even if your state has weak laws, you can still set the rules for your own teen. “You're the parent,” says AAA's McNaull. “You control when your child gets licensed, you control the keys, and you control the car. You can put significant conditions in place.”

Start by making sure your teen always wears a seat belt. “It's the single most effective safety device in your car,” says Nason. But more than half of teen drivers killed on the road in 2006 weren't buckled up.

You can also lay down your own phase-in law. Set your teen's night driving limit to no later than 10 p.m., don't allow more than one passenger, and ban cell phones-even with a headset. “Using a phone with a headset is of no benefit to an inexperienced driver,” says University of Utah researcher David Strayer.

If your teen balks? Too bad, says Arthur Kellermann, MD, an emergency room physician who's also an injury-prevention researcher at Emory University and the father of a 20-year-old. “This is tough love,” he says.

Nicole Nason agrees: “Every time you say, 'You don't start this car without a seat belt on, you can't drive late at night, this is not the party mobile,' you are saving your children's lives.”

Which States Have the Toughest Laws?
In a first-ever analysis, we examined each state's graduated driver licensing, seat belt, and DUI laws and awarded points based on strictness. (Alaska gets more points in the seat belt category because anyone 16 and older who isn't buckled up can be fined; New Hampshire gets fewer points because it has no seat belt laws for 18- and 19-year olds.)

BEST
Alaska, California, Delaware, Washington, Illinois, Maine, Indiana, Oregon, Hawaii, Georgia, Kentucky, North Carolina, District of Columbia

GOOD
New Jersey, Connecticut, New York, Nebraska, Maryland, Oklahoma, Colorado, Tennessee, Alabama, Missouri, Louisiana, Utah

FAIR
Massachusetts, Vermont, Michigan, Ohio, Iowa, Virginia, Wisconsin, Pennsylvania, New Mexico, Texas, West Virginia, Arizona, Florida, Nevada

WORST
New Hampshire, Kansas, Wyoming, South Carolina, Mississippi, North Dakota, Minnesota, Idaho, Rhode Island, South Dakota, Montana, Arkansas

The Teen Death Toll
States with the toughest driving laws tend to have lower fatality rates, but other factors count too. Rural roads (with higher speed limits, less traffic, and fewer nearby medical services) are a big crash risk. The following is a list of the top 10 states in teen-driving fatalities per 100,000 kids over the past decade.

Mississippi 35.1, Wyoming 34.5, Montana 33.8, Alabama 33.5, Missouri 32.5, Arkansas 31.9, Tennessee 30.8, S. Dakota 30.8, Kentucky 30.6, Oklahoma 28.3
